Nor-Cal has another successful Olympic Day Event!

Lydia Scardina

Nor-Cal has had another successful Olympic Day event. This year on Saturday, June 21st, we took the celebration to the East Bay, to NewPark Mall in Newark.

I had the pleasure of addressing the crowd on the significance of International Olympic Day, which celebrates the birth of the modern Olympic Games and promotes fitness and well-being for people of all ages, along with the Olympic ideals of fair play, perseverance, respect and good sportsmanship.

About 200 members of the public stopped by to see some or all of the dance performances, acknowledging each one with generous applause and snapping photos of many.

Jim Kleinrath and Karen Andersen, Nor-Cal chapter president and vice president, shared emcee duties respectively, while music and photography was handled by chapter secretary, Mark Scardina. After the performances were completed, Jim conducted a beginning Cha Cha lesson for interested members of the public.

Many thanks go to all our wonderful Nor-Cal dancers, who performed many of the Standard and Latin dances, and even entertained the crowd with some Mexican folk dances, including a polka!

Our talented performers were: Winston and Lilly Chow, Tyler Li and Anjelica Lowe, John Huang and Angela He, Jim Kleinrath and Junko Tanabe, and Raul Herrera folk dancing with Junko.

Olympic Day events are held each June in over 160 countries around the world. The Nor-Cal Chapter of USA Dance celebrates Olympic Day in order to show its support for the USOC and the Olympic Movement, of which USA Dance is an integral part.
