USABDA NorCal's 2001 Winter FrolicThe day started with 2 wonderful workshops. Roberta Sun and Hunter Johnson led the first on American Smooth Waltz. They emphasized how good technique can produce a very smooth and polished performance. Michele Kincaid taught the second workshop on Nightclub Two Step. She presented basic Two Step technique and some very nice, leadable patterns. These workshops feature first-rate teachers with much individual attention at a bargain price. Don’t miss them. A full schedule of competitive events followed on the great floor of the Palo Alto Elks Lodge. There were semi-finals in several events and NINETEEN couples in the Jack and Jill Waltz! The evening was highlighted by two exciting shows. First, we had a West Coast Swing demonstration by Kyle Redd and Sarah Van Drake. This wonderful couple attended our event as spectators, and we persuaded them to do an impromptu show. They are fantastic! If you ever have a chance to see them or take lessons from them, don’t miss it. Thank you both very much! David Weise and Valentina danced our second show. These two are National Rising Star Finalists and have won many professional events around the country. They brought down the house. The applause was so great at the end of their planned show, that they graciously did one more dance for us as an encore. Many thanks, David and Valentina. Our competitions just seem to get better and better. Don’t miss these exciting evenings. Our officials and the results of the competitions are listed below. Again, I want to mention and thank all our USABDA NorCal Board members and volunteers: Tina Moretti, Hans Stork, Karen Andersen, Genya Mazo, Mark Sequerth, Turtle Brennen, Alex Chan, Natalie Kirilcek, Lynn Sanders, Alisa Connely, Rick Dale, Ron Nicholson, Dana Ben-Yehuda, Gabriel von Stephens, Dawn Neuhart, Scott Sahlman, John Haddon, and any others I might not know about. Without you these events would not be possible. NorCal is the most active USABDA chapter in the country in providing competitive events, and we should all be very proud of this achievement. I would again like to thank Gene Jennings for his most generous contributions of time and money, now and in the past. He is a true friend of dancers and dancing! I would like to especially welcome one new and one returning NorCal volunteer. Lynn Sanders has agreed to head our Volunteers Committee. We will need many volunteers to help with the 2001 USABDA Western Regional on June 16 at the San Jose Civic Auditorium. I am also very happy to announce that Natalie Kirilcuk has agreed to serve on the NorCal Board. Ken Liu had to resign for personal reasons. We are very sorry to lose Ken and want to thank him for all his hard work. Hopefully, Ken will be able to return in the future. In the meantime I would like to offer a very warm welcome to Natalie. Don’t miss our next two events: the 2001 USABDA Western Regional at the San Jose Civic Auditorium on June 16, 2001, and the NorCal Dance Tournament on November 3, 2001 at the Palo Alto Elks Lodge.
